New Guy wandering aimlessly around the Death Star

Hi all.

Been a long time fan of what you do and interested in getting involved. I'm from Dublin but live in Donegal.

I have a degree in modelmaking and special effects and my wife is a Sith Lord on a sewing machine so Im looking forward to getting some costumes going.

Naturally I feel I should prioritize getting my stormtrooper armour built as I imagine you need them for numbers, in that respect I'd welcome any advice on getting access to the vac-form pieces.  (I've looked through the official 501st costume directories, they said that there are people within the community who can do this, but can't advertise outside of forums or the mouse will get angry).

Other projects I'm considering at first are General Veers (at-at commander armour), Boba Fett and an Imperial Inquisitor.

Welcome to the forums Stephen, and we look forward to welcoming you to our ranks! We've plenty of Stormtroopers who can point you in the right direction, although I know most have traditionally used Ross from RWA Creations - you can find his group under that name on Facebook. He's based in the Isle of Wight so reasonably close, albeit with the risk of some extra costs in these post-Brexit days.

Your model making skills will certainly be just as welcome as you are, and I can say from experience that there's a lot of fun to be had building your own blaster. You'll find some build threads here on the forums for both costumes and props which you may find useful, and please feel free to start one yourself once you get underway.

Personally I'd love to see an Inquistitor in the garrison, so that would be my vote for your second costume 😉

Any others questions, ask any time!

Not to worry, the division of costumes in the 501st is a bit arbitrary, and isn't always intuitive! It's the Flagship Eclipse Detachment that you want, they have detailed CRLs for most of the Inquisitors to have appeared so far:

Be sure to join their own forum as well to find even more detailed advice on the costume.

Hello and welcome!

My name is Richard and I am one of the Garrison Membership Liaison.

Can never have enough TKs! Very iconic and for street troops, or for those who are not avid fans of Star Wars, one of the most recognisable kits from sci-fi in general.

Similarly, inquisitors are amazing and would be a great addition. I don’t think we currently have one in the garrison.

Some additional information for you:

The detachment websites are a great source for additional tips tricks and vendor details as well as the costume reference libraries (CRL)

Starship Eclipse:

https://www.theflagshipeclipse.com

https://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:FlagshipEclipse_CRL

FISD:

https://www.whitearmor.net

https://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:FISD_CRL

Additionally, the main legion website can be an excellent source as well. while broader in scope, does also offer a significant amount of information:

https://www.501st.com/forum/

Please keep us up to date on your journey. I initially started out with the thoughts of a Vader but was swayed to a Stormtrooper, which was quickly followed by a Shadow Scout.

Everything a price has, however, isn’t always money, the price is.

Welcome Stephen, great to have you on board, as the others have already mentioned the Stormtrooper is a great choice and also a classic, I am slightly biased in this regard though, lol.

Three vendors for the armour that come to mind would be DA props, RWA creations and RS Prop Masters, Ross from RWA is based in the UK as Daniel has already mentioned, Andy from DA props is now based in France, I have build both kits and they are great.

The most screen accurate would be RS Prop Master (UK based), they are all pulled from moulds taken from a screen used set of armour (warts and all).

I'm currently building a Vader mask from scratch but a full costume isn't a priority as there all ready seem to be a few. Id rather focus on characters that are needed for now

Brill thanks. I have a stormtrooper kit piggy bank set up so I should have it in a few months. In the meantime, I'll be researching inquistor costumes and a 0-0-0 imperial protocol droid scuttling alongside some troopers might be fun 😊

Lovely to see some scratch build work!

And if you're considering a Triple 0, it's my turn to be biased -  that's a Spec Ops Detachment costume, and I'll always be happy to see more of those 👌

I may go on this for a first full on scratch build. I was contemplating on making a trooper costume from scratch but it may look a bit off, next to vac-formed troopers. Best to keep them uniform. It shouldn't be too difficult for me to find c3p0 patterns to use as a starting base

A 000, wow!!!!!

That would be amazing.

I'm staff at the Spec Ops detachment along with @tipperaryred & @SyntaxError, so we would love you to take on this build.

I only recently saw my 1st 000 in the flesh at Celebration in London & the costume blew me away.

The Spec Ops forums will have a section on the 000 droid, so make sure to check that out.

How epic would this be?

The only complete and reliable looking pattern for 3pO was a 12 inch pepekura template. So after hours of intense calculatoring, I worked out the scale up and got it printed. So we have a starting point for Trip. I'll post some progress later in the week when he starts to take shape. 🙂

I know some have 3d printed the armour for 000. I'm not certain if pepekura would be allowed for this build.

I try to avoid 3Dprinting and keep it old school. The pep file going to give me the initial shape to work the fibreglass over.
