Hello from Waterford

Recommended Posts

As the title says, hello!

Recently signed up and checking out the forum materials.

From Waterford, running out of DIY projects at home, and thought I might revisit an old passion of mine - figuring out how to build a Star Wars costume. Haven’t gotten very far with it in the past, but, never looked for help either!

So, bit about me, work in finance, have a wife and daughter. Enjoy hobbies and have tried most things from building a pc to brewing cider.

Have seen the 501st at a few events and thought it would be neat to eventually become part of the troop.

That’s it really!

Hi and welcome to the forum! Do you have an idea about what kind of costume are you aiming for?

Hi there & welcome to the forums.

We have a nice bunch of tropers in the south east & we look foward to seeing you at troops whenever we are back up & running.

As Andrea asked above, we'd love to know what costume you would like to build. Hopefully there wil be a few members that can point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the welcome!

Trying to decide on scope of what I’d like to build - looking into a Mandalorian Armor set either going down the route of Jango/Boba, or maybe something recent like - Mando / Djarin.

Alternatively, the staples of Storm/Clone trooper, Vader - etc. They’re all good.

They sound like great costumes. We have one Boba Fett costume in the garrison, but no Jango or Mandos have been cleared yet.

They are a tough enough 1st build, but would look epic. Each costume has a CRL or Costume Reference Library, so for example the classic stormtrooper CRL is https://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:TK_anh_stunt

The legion is divided into various detachments. Have a look at the detachments list on the legion website - https://www.501st.com/detachments.php

Each detachment has their own forum where you can check many build threads from around the world that may be of some help to you in your build.

So Boba & Jango would be in the Bounty Hunters guild.

The Bounty Hunters Guild list of costumes are https://databank.501st.com/databank/BHG_CRL & their forums are http://thebhg.net/

There's some reading to keep you busy for the next while. 😉

Yes, found some of that late night reading material - thoroughly impressive detail.

Do people tend to buy custom packs that lean towards level 1 and then slowly upgrade overtime, or is there a small industry of personally owned high quality 3D printers out there I need to consider getting in on?

Every costume is cleared as 1st level. There's no need or pressure to go for higher level clearance.  That's completely up to every trooper. I have a few costumes & only decided recently to try for level 2 'specialist' for my Shadow Scout. All others are clearance level.

Most troopers buy a kit & build. Others own a 3d printer & print the parts. That's up to each trooper. Vac formed ABS has some benefits over printed parts as the ABS is less brittle. Really depends on the costume & trooper's choice.

Hello and welcome to the forums, myself and few others are based in Wexford so not to far away😎,

Happy to meet up (when it is safe) if you ever want to have a chat about costumes, the club or just a natter.

Shane and given a great explanation of how costuming works within our club, I will also add that if you plan on putting one together, and see something for sale, it is always a good idea to run it by us first to avoid any costly mistakes, we are a friendly bunch who can give you great advice.

I might even be picking your brain on building a PC as I am currently putting one together for my Daughter, she has been plaguing me for one for a number of weeks now 😁

Thanks very much and will definitely be checking in before I spend on anything reckless 😁

In general, trying to decide what route to go down, would like to hear some opinions; (I’m looking for a long term hobby on top of passion projects, so thinking long term rather than get it done)

For the trooper set; Buying a 3D printer versus buying the final pieces from reputable sources and painting / finishing myself.

For the mandalorian set - I’m really taken by the thought of casting this from aluminium - thoughts?

Do! When it comes to PC builds, it’s geared far more towards the amateur now with plug and play being the main driver of industry.

Edit:
*might be worth moving this from introductions to an appropriate sub forum - admins choice*

A lot of costumes can depend on budget, you maybe aware at this point that none are cheap!, the only time I have seen ones that can be cheaper would be members selling or changing costumes., bargains can sometimes be had, we have a sales area here where sometimes costumes can be found here:- https://www.irelandlegions.com/forums/index.php?/forum/26-junkyard-for-saletrade/

If you went for something like a 'Original trilogy Stormtrooper' or 'TK' , we can point you in the right direction, we know quite a few reputable vendors that make them in the same way as the originals, vacuum formed abs plastic (ready build or in kit form), Stormtroopers are always a great choice, they get plenty of attention, then again I am slightly biased in this regard😜

As far as '3d printed costumes vs vac form' I generally lean towards vac if it was available, I put together a 3d print death trooper once and it was an epic amount of sanding, priming, painting etc etc, then there is the practicality of the costumes for wearing at events, vac form is nice and light, this is just my experience though and really depends on what you plan to do with the costume once completed.

For Mandalorians I would check out the detachment for the best info on this:- https://mandalorianmercs.org/ , are you referring to real metal aluminium casting, or using resin and aluminium power to cold cast in resin?, I don't have experience with real metal casting but have some experience with resin casting small props.

I best advice I can give is to go for the costume/s that interests you the most then start a 'build thread', this can be very useful, members will chime in with tips and advice to help.

If you want us to move or split this topic here:- https://www.irelandlegions.com/forums/index.php?/forum/19-propscostumes-discussions-questions/ we can no problem, or just leave it here and start a new thread  😎

*Yeah PC's look a lot less intimidating that they used to be to build! lol

These aren’t the forums I’m looking for  or maybe they are. I assume these are the ones where I need to be approved prior to getting access 😁 a goal at least.

Do you mould storm trooper pieces?

In terms of what I’d like to build, Mandalorian / Trooper (Clone, Storm or First Order, I’m not biased) / Vader - all long term passion projects so not expecting to be done this year or maybe even next - what I intend to do - mix of display and functional for events eventually. - yes, can definitely see they’re not “cheap” to do.

On PC builds drop me a message on what you’re looking for - RGB to the top or functional.

This website is a great resource and helps solve the few compatibility issues that still exist.

Thanks very much! Does it take a day or so for the viewing rights to kick in?

Guess I need to do a bit more reading into different materials - didn’t really ever consider ABS vs PVC or know the different until today. I’ll take a look through some of the other threads and see where best to start from.

Hmm, should be working now, try logging in and out.

Most kits are ABS, there is little difference in the two, I would recommend ABS, it is available in two thicknesses, 1.5mm and 2mm, both are slightly off-white (same as the screen used armour) the 1.5mm is easier to work with, some members prefer acrylic capped which is bright white, it is slightly more brittle and also more expensive but does look nice 😊
